AAUW Public Policy Program
The Public Policy Program is the cornerstone of our mission to promote gender equity for women and girls. Through this program, AAUW has been primarily responsible for all legislation passed in favor of women in the last 100 years. The success of this program depends on a synergistic relationship between the national organization and its thousands of branches, including our own. The Poughkeepsie Branch has been active in speaking out on legislation and policies that are important to women and girls.
The entire public policy process is thorough, transparent and inclusive:
- AAUW’s policy work connects and rallies advocates at the local, state, national, and global levels to advance our work to empower women and girls. With the member-endorsed Public Policy Program as our guide, AAUW uses lobbying and grassroots efforts to push forward policies that break through educational and economic barriers for women.
- The AAUW Director of Public Policy & Legal Advocacy, with input from the member leaders of the AAUW Public Policy Committee, leads AAUW’s lobbying and grassroots efforts. However, AAUW member advocates across the country who give their time, energy, and voice to AAUW issues deserve the credit for truly advancing women.
- At the local level, we are kept abreast of the progress of the bill and are provided timely opportunities to write letters and send petitions to our elected officials urging them to act in favor of bills and acts that support gender equity.
Two-Minute Activist
A unique feature of our Public Policy Program is the Two-Minute Activist. Easy to use, this mechanism gives us the latest legislative updates and carries our voices to members of the Congress.
